African-Americans were subject to poor quality property donations from the government and abuse. They did receive books to help them learn however they were in very poor condition when received. The article Report of the Board of Education for Freedmen, Department of the Gulf describes some of the property damage blacks received for example,"Bricks have been hurled through windows, greatly risking limb and life."Despite the condition blacks received books and tables in, they were treasured so that they didn't worsen in quality. Unfortunately, racism carried over from before and the school buildings were broken into and property was vandalized. Plus, the locations of the schools were not ideal and required blacks to travel through thick mud, ruining their clothing and causing illness. Although some people were racist, others were very kind and volunteered to teach the students willingly even though they may not have been black.
